Dental crown treatment in Hanoi

Dental crowns restore the visible part of a tooth that has been significantly damaged, weakened, worn, or previously treated. A well-planned crown can improve strength, shape, colour, chewing function, and appearance.

At Nha Khoa Mễ Trì, patients considering dental crown treatment receive an in-person examination before any recommendation is made. The dentist assesses the remaining tooth structure, gums, bite, cosmetic expectations, and whether a more conservative option could provide a suitable result.

Crown options range from 1,500,000 to 10,000,000 VND per tooth. From consultation to final fitting, treatment typically takes 1-2 weeks, depending on the number and condition of the teeth and whether preliminary care is required.

Prices, materials, process, and treatment planning

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a fixed restoration that covers the prepared visible portion of a tooth. It may protect weakened tooth structure, restore chewing function, or improve the shape and colour of a tooth.

A crown provides more extensive coverage than a filling, veneer, inlay, or onlay. Because crown placement generally requires more tooth preparation, it is considered an irreversible treatment.

A dentist may consider a crown for:

  • A heavily damaged, fractured, or weakened tooth.
  • A tooth with a large filling and insufficient remaining structure.
  • A tooth that has received root canal treatment and needs additional protection.
  • Severe wear or erosion affecting shape or function.
  • A severely discoloured or misshapen tooth when conservative cosmetic options are unsuitable.
  • Replacement of an old, damaged, loose, or poorly fitting crown.
  • The visible restoration placed over a dental implant.
  • Selected multi-tooth or cosmetic smile-restoration cases.

Crowns should not be recommended solely for cosmetic reasons when whitening, composite bonding, veneers, or another conservative treatment may provide an appropriate result.

When may a crown not be the best option?

A crown may not be the first choice for minor discolouration, small chips, limited decay, or localised damage that can be treated with bonding, a filling, a veneer, an inlay, or an onlay.

Untreated gum disease, active infection, insufficient supporting tooth structure, and significant bite problems should be assessed before crown treatment proceeds. The dentist should preserve as much healthy enamel and dentine as possible. A crown is recommended only when its expected restorative or cosmetic benefit justifies the required tooth preparation.

Comparing crown materials

Metal-ceramic crowns are the lowest-priced option in the current range. Their metal-based construction generally offers lower aesthetic quality than all-ceramic options, especially near a visible gum line.

Titanium porcelain crowns are another metal-based option. The choice should consider tooth position, bite, cosmetic expectations, and the condition of the supporting tooth rather than price alone.

Venus crowns provide a mid-range option with a listed seven-year warranty. Ceramill and HT Smile sit in a higher price range and may be discussed when stronger aesthetic requirements are involved.

Orodent and GC Lava Esthetic crowns are the highest-priced listed options and have longer warranty periods. The most expensive material is not automatically the most appropriate. Front teeth may place greater emphasis on shade, translucency, and gum-line appearance, while molars require careful assessment of chewing forces and remaining tooth structure.

Dental crown treatment process

  1. Free consultation and oral examination.
  2. X-rays or other diagnostics when clinically necessary.
  3. Assessment of the tooth, gums, bite, remaining structure, and cosmetic goals.
  4. Treatment of decay, infection, or gum problems when required.
  5. Tooth preparation to create appropriate space for the crown.
  6. Impression-taking or scanning for crown fabrication.
  7. Placement of a temporary crown when appropriate.
  8. Laboratory fabrication of the definitive crown.
  9. Trial fitting and evaluation of fit, shade, contact points, and bite.
  10. Final cementation when the restoration meets clinical requirements.
  11. Follow-up examination or bite adjustment when needed.

From consultation to final fitting, treatment typically takes 1-2 weeks. The exact schedule depends on the number of teeth, tooth and gum condition, laboratory fabrication, temporary restoration requirements, preliminary treatment, and any bite adjustments. Not every patient requires the same number of appointments.

Tooth preparation and preserving healthy tooth structure

A crown needs enough space to achieve the planned shape, fit, and function. The amount of preparation varies according to the tooth condition and selected material. Because tooth preparation cannot be reversed, alternatives should be discussed before treatment.

The dentist should preserve healthy enamel and dentine wherever possible while removing damaged or unsupported structure. Local anaesthesia is used when appropriate. Mild sensitivity or temporary discomfort may occur during the first few days. A temporary crown can protect the prepared tooth and maintain appearance and function while the definitive crown is being made.

Treatment that may be required first

Depending on the examination, preliminary care may include:

  • A filling or core build-up.
  • Root canal treatment.
  • Gum treatment.
  • Crown lengthening.
  • Bite adjustment.
  • Management of teeth grinding.
  • Orthodontic treatment in selected cases.
  • Extraction when a tooth cannot be predictably restored.

Root canal treatment is not automatically required before every crown. Additional procedures are recommended only when clinically necessary and are quoted before treatment begins.

Crowns compared with alternatives

TreatmentCommon purposeTypical tooth preparation
Composite bondingMinor shape, chip, or colour correctionMinimal
VeneerCosmetic improvement of the front surfaceUsually less than a crown
Inlay/onlayPartial restoration of a damaged back toothMore conservative than a full crown
CrownFull coverage for significant damage or restorationGreater preparation
Implant crownReplaces the visible tooth over an implantNo preparation of neighbouring teeth

Warranty and aftercare

Warranty periods vary by material and do not mean that a crown will automatically last for exactly that period. Final warranty terms and conditions are confirmed before treatment. Coverage may depend on appropriate oral care and follow-up, and may not include damage caused by accidents, untreated grinding, misuse, or biting very hard objects.

After treatment, brush normally, clean between the teeth, attend recommended reviews, and avoid using crowned teeth as tools. Contact the clinic if persistent pain, looseness, bite discomfort, or gum irritation develops. A night guard may be considered when clinically significant grinding is identified.

Dental crown treatment for international patients in Hanoi

English-language consultation can be arranged and should be confirmed when booking. Patients can request a written treatment explanation, exact VND pricing, expected appointment stages, temporary crown planning, treatment records, and invoices where applicable.

Visitors with a limited stay should share their arrival and departure dates before treatment planning. The clinic can then assess whether examination, preliminary care, laboratory work, fitting, and follow-up can reasonably be completed during that period. Completion within a particular stay cannot be confirmed until the teeth have been examined.
