What is Scaling?

Scaling is a dental procedure aimed at removing hardened plaque (tartar) and stains accumulated on the tooth surface, especially in areas that are difficult to clean with a regular toothbrush. After scaling, the teeth are usually polished to smooth the surface, helping to reduce bacterial adhesion in the future.

When should you get scaling?

  • When plaque or tartar appears at the tooth roots, especially near the gums
  • Signs of gingivitis such as bleeding gums, swollen and red gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Recommended by the dentist for regular scaling to prevent oral diseases
  • Before undergoing other dental procedures to ensure a clean oral environment

Benefits of Scaling

  • Reduces the risk of gingivitis, periodontitis, and tooth decay
  • Helps keep teeth clean and reduces bad breath
  • Supports long-term oral health maintenance
  • Facilitates examination and treatment of other dental issues
  • Improves the feeling of cleanliness and aesthetics of the teeth

Scaling Methods

  • Ultrasonic scaling: Common, gentle, and causes minimal discomfort
  • Manual scaling: Usually applied for special areas or as additional support when needed Depending on the oral condition, the dentist will recommend the appropriate method.

Procedure

  1. The dentist performs a general examination and assesses the amount of tartar and gum condition.
  2. Uses an ultrasonic device to remove tartar and plaque around the teeth, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
  3. Cleans remaining stains and polishes the tooth surface.
  4. Provides home oral care instructions and schedules follow-up visits if necessary.

Aftercare Following Scaling

  • Avoid consuming very hot, cold, or strongly colored foods and drinks for the first few hours
  • Brush gently using a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Rinse your mouth with saline solution or dental rinse as directed
  • Maintain proper oral hygiene habits and attend regular dental check-ups as recommended by your dentist

Important Notes

  • Some cases may experience mild sensitivity after scaling, which usually decreases within a few days
  • The frequency of scaling should follow the dentist’s recommendation, typically every 3-6 months depending on oral health
  • Direct examination helps accurately assess tartar levels and select the appropriate method
  • Do not attempt to use home scaling tools to avoid gum and enamel damage

"I have had dental treatment here about 4-5 times. Once for scaling and wisdom tooth extraction on the upper left side (after extraction, I could eat broken rice that evening without pain). Once for gum inflammation where they drained the pus and applied medicine + gave me medication -> healed. Once for extracting 2 wisdom teeth on the right side, I was very afraid of pain at first, but after extraction, when the anesthesia wore off, it only hurt a little, took a pain-relief effervescent tablet and slept until morning. Overall, this place is okay, prices are reasonable, dentists are gentle and enthusiastic. I give 100 points."
